Gucci Street-Wear

To note this capsule collection is only available at the Gucci Garden gift shop in Florence. Created in collaboration with London based illustrator Isabella Cotier.

Her work is vibrant and full of character and movement, as well as style. The illustrations remind me of the drawings in a Roald Dahl book, but if they were done by a fashion illustrator- it's the rough and carefree nature of the pencil strokes and colour fill that characterise it, and who does character in fashion well? Gucci.

What a better way to try and crack a niche approach to streetwear by adding a little bit of artistic flare and Gucci character to traditional pieces like hoodies and oversized t-shirts.

Street style has been an integral part of Gucci since the rise of Alessandro Michele. However this is not the street style of instagram, often associated with hype-beasts, this is more of an authentic take on it. it is more of the historical and contemporary flavours of Italy and the world that Michele has admired for years through art and inspirations on the street.

Cotier says that the some people within the illustrations are based on real people she has witnessed in Florence. Looking to the more older generation for inspiration, they have more history and character, they embody Florence. She explains that some of her characters are serious. The illustration series partners perfectly with the maximalist and vibrantly coloured world that Michele has created for Gucci. All of the charcters are drawn eccentrically and in a flamboyant way, very fitting for the brand. I like the idea of trying to decide on whether the person in the drawing is real or exaggerated, it makes you create a story in your mind about who they are, what they are doing and how they came to be. It's a very refreshing take on storytelling, taking it back to basics.
