CARLOTA GUERRERO

Searching through instagram, as I do, I found @carlota_guerrero. Many have named her work "aesthetic bliss" and I totally agree. The Spanish artist herself rose to fame when she took artistic direction for Solange's album ‘A Seat at the Table". Beyond this her portfolio has grown with her popularity. Before this she lived in Barcelona as she developed her photographic and skills in art direction. She refined everything she had, until she nailed her unique visual language.

But how did Solange find her?

Like all of us who found her, it was through instagram.

After collaborating with each other on a performance at the TATE modern they realised that their creative connection was intertwined, hence that's why she helped with her album. Solange's music videos for 'Don't Touch my Hair' and 'Cranes in the Sky' were filmed by the two of them as they spent an entire month on a road trip together. GUERRERO told It's Nice That "The album has a very strong message about black community, and I had to learn a lot and help [Solange] translate such strong messages in a beautiful and clear visual language”

Other collaborations Carlotta has pursued are with brands like The Fader, Bon Magazine, Nylon Magazine and Nike. As well as this she has been commissioned in the past to interpret poems by writer Rupi Kaur, this is very different to her usual projects however they all have the same theme of Guerrero's colouring and composition work.

A lot of her work is aesthetic. Using intriguing objects, clothing and poses she creates beautiful, real and stunning imagery. Using objects such as glitter and flowers as clothing, my personal favourite is the use of water for underwear, to create a natural look and feel to it. Carlota describes her colour palette as “soft and low saturated colours and anything that seems harmonic, really. Relaxing textures and objects, things that could be the opposite to anxiety” Consider my anxiety suppressed for now. Everything she creates connotes a peaceful existence. All of it surrounds and idea of feminism and equality, using naked women of all ethnicities in powerful ways.
