Fabrics China: S/S 2019 Analysis

Updated: May 7, 2018

*ALL INFO HAS BEEN ADAPTED FROM THE ORIGINAL ANALYSIS OF FABRICS CHINA*

Metallic Shine

Evident when you walk around the summery nightlife of England, Metallics are a trend. According to Fabrics china this also includes being relevant within technical and performance fabrics. Coatings and tints allow fabrics to change colour around light and movement, and allowing texture enables a silvery tone to any grey fabric. Most of the techniques are achieved through double faced fabrics made of polyester. This ultimately means having a darker contrast to the back of the fabric, compared to the metallic solid.

Colour Plains

Contrasts are another trend. Another use of double faced fabric is to create and interest and to create a versatile quality. These are usually seen on active and performance fabrics. The fabric itself are smooth and plain; usually have simple twill structures and matte finishes. Again polyester is a factor, however this time it is fused with a polyamide and cotton blend. This creates an 'authentic hand feel'

Delicate Grids

This form of fabric allows the designer to create a translucent effect, without it actually being exactly that. Made by denting and/or weaving dissolvable yarns in grids. Often this fabric is lightweight, which adds to the idea of translucency. Polyester's content is key to this fabric. Its strength and durability adds performance whilst still having a delicate appearance.

Surface Texture

Stated to be an important trend, tonal textures such as crepe and crumbled has been smeared all over fabric surfaces. Created with yarn and seersucker constructions that create wave like motions that add dimension to a dry feeling fabric. A polyamide, polyester and viscose blend have Spandex qualities. This enhances the retracted and textural effects that provide ease of movement.

Soft Lightweights

No matter where we are in the 21st century, this colour palette will always be a relevant part of each year. These being softer shades of pink, pastel greys and off-whites. Altogether or as separates they create a delicate look to already lightweight fabrics, they are also finished with a silky feel/look. Everything about them is clean and crisp. Another polyamide content. It offers durability and softness from recycled polyamide which is a fantastic sustainable option.

Double Faced

These fabrics have always had a commercial appeal. Space-dyed yarns and melanges are coloured, bringing variety to a designer/consumer. Small-scale geometrics are used to create patterns and technical jacquards for visual interest. A mix of wool, polyester and polyamide are used to create a softness to the material. In terms of the future this is very innovative for a fabric as it now includes nano-carbon yarn that increases its strength and durability.
